Antioch Fire Department assumes full EMS for district
The *Daily Herald* recently published an article detailing a major shift in emergency medical services (EMS) in Antioch. For the first time since 1938, the Antioch Rescue Squad (ARS) is no longer contracted to provide ambulance services for fire or rescue calls in the area. The long-standing agreement between ARS and the First Fire Protection District of Antioch officially ended at 5 a.m. on Friday, marking a significant change in how emergency care is delivered across the town and unincorporated areas.
According to officials, all 27,000 residents of Antioch and Antioch Township will now be served by the Antioch Fire Department. Fire Chief John Nixon shared that the transition was smooth and went off without a hitch. “We had an extremely peaceful transition at 5 a.m., and we’ve now established ourselves throughout the district,†he said. Nixon also mentioned that crews are actively moving into Fire Station 3 on Grass Lake Road, with 11 employees currently stationed at the three fire stations.
To ensure a seamless switch, essential fire service computer systems were uploaded to dispatch centers and ambulances. Nixon emphasized that residents should not notice any changes in response times or service quality. “People in need should not see any difference in the way their calls are handled,†he added.
This shift comes after the First Fire Protection District decided not to renew its contract with ARS this year. The goal is to consolidate fire and rescue services under one department, improving efficiency and coordination. A similar decision was made in the area just one year ago.
ARS President Todd Thommes expressed uncertainty about the future of the squad. “We don’t have a plan in place right now,†he said. “I wish I could give a clearer picture of what’s next, but as it stands, we’re still evaluating our options.†He added that the team is in the process of reviewing their next steps.
This change marks a turning point for emergency services in the region, and the community is watching closely to see how the new system performs.
Thanks, Dan.
